Health-care system in poor shape

- Marion Bushnik Sydney Mines

With a shortage of doctors and hospital emergency room closures, especially on weekends, I guess you’re not supposed to get sick on certain days. Hospitals should be open 24/7. The government doesn’t mind spending our tax dollars, but they should have been spending more money to help young people who want to become doctors. It would be money well spent.

I lost a friend who was sick on a Sunday. She was taken to hospital and they sent her home the same day. She died the next day. She lived alone and was in a wheelchair. She also had heart problems, diabetes and was on dialysis three times a week. She should have been kept in the hospital, at least for check-ups overnight.

I recently saw a story in the Cape Breton Post about a man in his 90s who was sitting in a wheelchair all day in the hospital and had bed sores. When family members asked to have him put in a bed they were told that it was too much trouble because they’d have to get him up for dinner again. It shouldn’t have been any trouble because they have a lift to help put him in bed. People should start taking a closer look at the care their loved ones receive. There should never be bed sores on anyone as it is preventable.

Another thing I’d like to say is that the health authority should ban all these texting phones in hospitals and nursing homes. I have seen staff members texting for more than 15 minutes. That’s 15 minutes that could be spent with a patient

Something has to be done about the health-care system. Right now, an animal gets better care than some humans.

I read MLA Tammy Martin’s articles in the Post all the time, especially about health care. I wish others were more like her. Keep up the good work, Tammy.

I hope things change for the better soon.
