PODANOVITCH, Sophie Margaretta (Newhook)

-

It is with tremendous sadness that we, the family of Sophie Podanovitch (Newhook), announce her peaceful passing at the age of 87, surrounded by the love and comfort of her family and the impeccable care of the Palliative Care staff (with special thanks to wonderful staff on 4B) at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on April 16, 2018.

Sophie, born in Norman’s Cove, Newfoundland on July 3, 1930, was an avid fisherwoman who found incredible peace and joy on the water with a fishing rod in her hand. She enjoyed many summers in Lake Ainslie having the time of her life. Sophie loved her bingo nights with her most faithful companion Barbara Wall, and Sophie lived for the Toronto Blue Jays and was truly their biggest fan.

Sophie was a kind, loving and beautiful woman who devoted her life to her husband and her sons and was the matriarch of a large family that will forever be grateful for the joy, love and strength that she instilled in each one of us. Sophie’s strength and compassion, shone in her granddaughter Vanessa in particular, who was Sophie’s primary caregiver in her final days. The dedication to her care will be forever appreciated by the entire family. Thank you, Mother Hen.

Sophie is survived by her beloved sons, Stephen (Barbara) and Gary (Barbara) Podanovitch, and grandchildren, Stephen (Meghan), Vanessa (Tommy), Sarah and Heather. Also surviving Sophie are her great-grandchildren, Kayla, Stephanie, Stephen, Jesse, Lexi, Kaylin, Sydney and Bella, as well as great-great-granddaughter, Elizabeth. Sophie also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and dear friends.

Sophie was pre-deceased by her husband and the love of her life, Stephen (Pete) Podanovitch; her parents, Charles and Thurza Newhook; all of her cherished siblings, Harry, Jacob, Lewis, Sadie, Phebe, Effie and Hazel, and nieces, Sadie Dale, Joyce, Florence and Sadie.

Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Sophie’s Life is to take place on Thursday April 19, 2018 at 1 p.m. at S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. Interment to take place at a later date.
