Annual heavy garbage collection begins Monday in Victoria County.

Victoria County residents looking to get rid of heavy items in their homes or on their properties will have an opportunity to do so next week.

The county’s annual heavy garbage collection will begin on Monday and will continue until collection is completed in all communities.

“It’s very similar to what happens in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality in that once a year our collection and our waste management crews go out and collect heavy garbage items,” said Jocelyn Bethune, spokesperson for Victoria County public works.

“A lot of people wonder when the crews will be in their community, so in order for us to set it up logistically, we can only visit communities once. We put aside two and a half weeks to make sure that we go to each community.”

Electronics are among the items that won’t be collected as part of the heavy garbage pickup.

“I think it’s important for our residents to realize that anything they put out for heavy garbage actually ends up in the garbage,” said Bethune, noting all garbage from Victoria County is transported to Guysborough County.

“Items like televisions and computers, all of those can be recycled, so we don’t want them mixed in with heavy garbage.”

Last Saturday, Victoria County launched its new reuse centre at the solid waste facility in Baddeck.

The centre features items that have been thrown away or donated but are in proper working

condition and can still provide a service.

During the heavy garbage collection process, Victoria County staff will assess items they believe could still serve a purpose to local residents.

“What we’ve done in the past and I would encourage residents to do now, if it’s an item that they want to get rid of, but it still has life in it, put a sign on it to (say) it’s still in working condition,” said Bethune.

“People often drive around and find treasures during heavy garbage collection, so that’s two ways that residents can encourage recycling.”

Victoria County asks that all heavy garbage items be place curbside by 7 a.m. on Monday

to ensure collection.
