Katie Clemens has some basic goals for her Basketball Cape Breton Capers U14 girls team this weekend for the sixth annual Cape Breton Classic.

“We’re hoping to give it our all and win as many games as we can,” said the 13-year-old post player from Sydney. “But we’re especially hoping to have fun.”

The tournament will be played at six different gyms across the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. A total of 56 boys and girls teams will compete in eight different divisions.

The Capers U14 girls (ages 12-13) will play their games this weekend at the Sherwood Park Education Centre in Sydney.

“We take our time and try to do our best,” said Clemens, who also played ‘AAA’ basketball at Whitney Pier Memorial. “We definitely rely on each other a

lot. We try to play as a team. We come on the court with a positive attitude all the time.”

Capers head coach Leslie Timmons said it’s an exciting weekend for her team.

“It’s after provincials, it finishes off the year, it ties things up nicely and it’s a way to celebrate the end of the season with lots of positive experiences for the kids,” she said. “You work to progress the whole year through and I think we’re at a good point right now as a team to be ready to play well this weekend.”

Round robin play begins today and concludes with the championship games for each division on Sunday.
