- BY CAPE BRETON POST STAFF

A former Sydney woman who physically and verbally attacked police officers, paramedics and nurses, all of whom were attempting to help her, has been sentenced to complete a conditional sentence followed by a lengthy probation period.

Shyleen Dimera LaBobe, 22, formerly of Membertou but who now resides in Halifax, was sentenced on two counts of assault, two counts of breaching court orders, and single counts of refusing a breathalyzer demand, mischief relating to property damage, uttering threats and assaulting a police officer.

The offences occurred between January 2017 to January 2018.

She was given a six-month conditional sentence, to be served in the community, followed by a 24-month probation period.

The court was told that in April 2017, LaBobe was found in a vehicle, partially on the sidewalk, on Churchill Drive in Sydney.

LaBobe told the officer she was attempting to parallel park when one of the tires went flat.

She was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drinking and driving and immediately became verbally abusive with the officer and threatened to kill him.

In June 2017, LaBobe was found on the ground in Sydney Mines after having suffered a seizure.

As police and paramedics attempted to help her, LaBobe again became physically and verbally abusive by spitting, hollering and threatening to harm anyone who attempted to touch her.

Her antics inside the ambulance resulted in damage to an oxygen sensor.

At one point, LaBobe kicked a police officer in the face.

While at the hospital, LaBobe continued to scratch and claw and hurled insults to nursing staff, threatening to slit the throat of anyone who came near her.

In another incident in July 2017, LaBobe and a man were found at the Seven Mile Bridge, in Howie Centre, stripping off and preparing to enter the water.

The pair was intoxicated and LaBobe was arrested for breaching her release conditions by being drunk in public.

Among the conditions of her sentence and probation, LaBobe is to refrain from alcohol and possession of weapons.

She is also to adhere to a curfew and continue her rehabilitation therapy.

She informed the court that she is trying to piece her life back together and has found two part-time jobs along with enrolling in rehab.

In addition to the jail sentence, LaBobe was also fined $2,000 on the refusal charge and had her driver’s licence suspended for 18 months.
