A solitary sanctuary located near Cape Breton’s western coastline was recently recognized as being one of the best new buildings in the country.

And for a mere $845,000 this striking home and 35-acre cliffside property could be yours.

The towering structure was built along the Sight Point Road in Inverness a few years ago by a New Jersey-based lawyer.

The homeowner is now seeking to sell the property in order to build another residence on approximately 300 acres further down the road.

“This is what some people would consider remote,” said listing agent Paul Smith. “It’s not remote, it’s very close to Inverness and the road is good but he thinks that’s too civilized for him.”

The property, known as Rabbit Snare Gorge, and its bold residence was recently announced as one of 12 recipients of the Governor General’s medal for architecture.

The one-bedroom, singlefamily home was designed as a summer getaway with open living spaces including a third level mezzanine with dramatic views through large corner windows.

The interior design remains simple with wood panelling and white surfaces.

“It’s a really small footprint,” said Smith. “You go in the door and there’s a bathroom with no tub.”

The three-storey tower was designed by both Halifax- and Toronto-based architect, Omar Gandhi, and New York-based Design Base 8.

Smith said the property includes 1,000 feet of oceanfront on the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The gorge itself comprises two ravines with brooks that connect on the property and run into the sea.

Additional buildings located on site are a matching wooden boathouse and a unique triangular-shaped studio that abuts a steep cliff.

Although the property remains for sale, Smith said the owner is thinking of taking it off the market soon.
