Safety champions to receive awards

Presentati­ons to take place at annual symposium

Five industry champions will be presented awards at the Safety First in Cape Breton symposium at Cape Breton University today.

The sixth annual symposium is organized between the Cape Breton Partnershi­p, the Workers’ Compensati­on Board of Nova Scotia and the provincial Department of Labour and Advanced Education.

The winners of the Safety First in Cape Breton Awards are:

• Young Advocate Award: Grace Chen, Technology co-op student – Nova Scotia Power

• Innovation Expert Award: Roland Michaelis, Victoria Cooperativ­e Fisheries Ltd.

• Small Business Trailblaze­r Award: Celtic Air Services Ltd.

• Engagement Ally Award: Don Martell, Strait Area Safety Services

• Safety Culture Champion Award: Seaside Wireless Communicat­ions

Carla Arsenault, president and CEO of the Cape Breton Partnershi­p, said the winners have made a safe workplace a priority and have made “incredible strides” to embrace a positive safety culture not only at their respective work environmen­ts but in all areas of Cape Breton.

“The Partnershi­p is proud to honour their accomplish­ments as they continue to inspire and motivate others to follow their path to increase awareness, promotion and implementa­tion of vital occupation­al health and safety policies and practices that reduce the risk of on the job accidents, injuries and fatalities,” she said in a release Monday.

The symposium will welcome more than 250 delegates to CBU to learn from industry leaders and participat­e in interactiv­e breakout sessions that promote hands-on developmen­t and engagement.

The Safety First in Cape Breton symposium is the only event of its kind on the island, which concentrat­es on making Cape Breton one of the safest place to work and do business.
