Cape Breton flare teens to be sentenced

SYDNEY — Two Cape Breton teens are now to be sentenced in June after pleading guilty to offences in connection with the discharge of flares inside a retail store.

The pair was charged in relation to a Nov. 6, 2017 incident at the Walmart store in North Sydney that resulted in the store being closed down for several days and merchandis­e having to be restocked. Damages have been estimated at $7 million.

Both accused, a 15-year-old and a 17-year-old, have pleaded guilty to mischief over $5,000 and breaching a court order. Another accused is now completing a restorativ­e justice program. Sentencing is now set for June 6. In accordance with the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the names of the accused are prohibited from publicatio­n.
