Cape Breton flare teens to be sentenced

SYDNEY — Two Cape Breton teens are now to be sentenced in June after pleading guilty to offences in connection with the discharge of flares inside a retail store.

The pair was charged in relation to a Nov. 6, 2017 incident at the Walmart store in North Sydney that resulted in the store being closed down for several days and merchandise having to be restocked. Damages have been estimated at $7 million.

Both accused, a 15-year-old and a 17-year-old, have pleaded guilty to mischief over $5,000 and breaching a court order. Another accused is now completing a restorative justice program. Sentencing is now set for June 6. In accordance with the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the names of the accused are prohibited from publication.
