Preparing for achievement days

Finishing touches can make all the difference

- BY NICOLE MACEACHERN SUMMER ASSISTANT

Achievement days are quickly approaching in the Cape Breton Region beginning with Richmond County next week.

Here are some tips to make sure you are ready for Achievement Day:

• Double check your newsletter to make sure you met all of the requirements for your project. If you are in foods make sure your recipe has a recipe card attached, if in the crafts project ensure you have three projects ready to be evaluated; if in photography double check to make sure you have all the pictures for your current level.

• Don’t forget your record sheet. Record sheets can be found online or in the back of the project newsletter. Try and include as much detail as possible, the judges like to read about your year in the project. Did you know you can now fill out your record sheet on the computer? This is a great way to catch any spelling mistakes.

• Make sure to put your best foot forward. If you are showing livestock give your animal a bath and make sure your outfit is clean and tidy so you shine in the ring.

• Remember the finishing touches, before you pass your projects in erase pencil marks and remove hot glue stings, if dealing with fabric make sure there are no stains and iron out wrinkles.

After Achievement Day remember to read the green sheets 4-H staff leave with comments to learn what we loved about your project and what could be made even better for County Show.

I am very excited to see what the 4-H members made for projects this year and all the hard work that went into training the livestock.
