County preparing to welcome visitors

With the approach of June, the tourism season is coming to life in Richmond County.

Establishments such as Glad Tidings and Diddles Café & Bakery, Chubby’s, Jiggs Take Out and What’s the Scoop Ice Cream Shop in St. Peter’s and Groundswell B&B and Pub, Shirley’s Spud Wagon and Heart of Isle Madame Ice Cream Parlor on historic Isle Madame, have open their doors for business.

And campers will be glad to hear that as of June 8, Battery Park will be open for the season. We are already starting to see a good number of RVs travelling on our highways, which is another sign that summer is almost upon us.

Another welcome sign of summer’s approach is visible at the St. Peter’s Marina where boaters have begun lowering their boats back into the water.

The St. Peter’s Marina is the perfect spot to sail into, located at the southern entrance to the Bras d’Or Lake, it is everything a boater needs, beautiful setting, amazing service provided by the marina’s manager Gerry Gibson and his staff, who have years of experience of providing service.

While staying at the marina, boaters can visit the St. Peter’s Canal national historic site, the oldest working tidal lock system still operating in North America today. Or make a stop at the Nicolas Denys Museum and learn about the rich history of the area and about Nicolas Denys who founded the village of Saint Pierre in 1650. Then drop by the Wallace MacAskill House Museum and view the works and home of the famous marine photographer.

Boaters can also enjoy activities all summer long, with music available most nights, and community festivals held throughout the season — whether your interest is feasting on fresh Atlantic lobster or meeting up with some unsavory pirates or enjoying the rich cultural background of St. Peter’s and the surrounding areas.

St. Peter’s is the perfect place to get away from eating on the boat, as you can enjoy delicious dinning at our local restaurants or enjoy some takeout dishes from our local venues and pizza shop.

St. Peter’s also has a great variety of gift shops where you can find the perfect souvenirs to remind you of your visit to Cape Breton.
