Bottomley, Campbell take home top honours on day 1 of NSSAF track and field provincials in Sydney
Racers clear the first hurdle during a boys 100-metre hurdles (33”) Junior heat on Friday at the 2018 Nova Scotia Schools Athletic Federation Track and Field Championship at Cape Breton University. In the race were Lucas Nauss (Bayview), Kyle Rudderham (Malcolm Munroe), Liam Berthiaume (Dr. W.A. School), Caleb Wolthers (Ecole Acadien), Austin Conrad (Sommet), Noel Doucette (Whycocomagh), and Alex MacDonald (Eastern Passage).
A pair of Cape Breton athletes captured top honours during day 1 of action at the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation track and field provincial championship at the Cape Breton Health Recreation Complex on Friday. Ella Bottomley of Whitney Pier Memorial, who broke Highland Region records in the junior girls 1,500-metre and 3,000metre events last month, finished first in the junior girls 1,500-metre run with a time of 5:06.36, capturing the gold medal.
Meanwhile, in the senior girls high jump, Maddie Campbell of Baddeck Academy topped the podium, finishing first with a 1.60-metre jump.
Campbell also competed in the discus, finishing second behind Chelsea MacIsaac of
Cobequid Educational Centre of Truro. She also finished seventh in the 80-meter hurdles; that
race was won by Zoe Carvery of Sackville High School.
In the senior boys 1,500-metre,
Brandon Martin of Sydney Academy finished seventh out of 13 participants with a time of 4:38.95. Meanwhile, Chance Blackstone of Baddeck Academy finished 12th with a time of 4:53.60. The race was won by Drew Somers of Charles P. Allen High School of Bedford.
In total, 1,050 athletes representing 188 schools in 15 events are competing in the provincial championship this weekend.
The Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation track and field provincial championship will wrap up today with events beginning at 9 a.m. on the Cape Breton University campus.
