Sydney soldier part of Ceremonial Guard
Cassie Arsenault playing in Parliament Hill band
When the Ceremonial Guard marches through the nation’s capital this summer — the band playing and banners flying — there will be a local connection proudly helping to provide the music.
Cassie Arsenault from Sydney will be in the band as part of the Canadian Army’s guarantee of full-time summer employment to successful applicants to the primary reserves.
“The Ceremonial Guard is a big part of the summer season in Ottawa and I love representing
Cape Breton in the national capital region,” Arsenault said in a press release issued by the Canadian Armed Forces.
“I joined the Canadian Forces because I had an interest in Canadian military history and have always wanted to serve my country since I was young.”
The pipes and drums of the Ceremonial Guard with scarlets and bearskin headdresses worn by those who play them are among the most recognizable military units in Canada.
Band participation for soldiers like Arsenault includes three weeks of intensive drill training that sees participants master precision movements, attain a high standard of dress and deportment, and undergo extensive physical fitness training before they are fitted and tailored in the scarlet uniform.
For over 50 years the changing of the guard has been a top Ottawa summer attraction for visitors to Parliament Hill.
The band will also be part of the Fortissimo musical event from July 19-21 on the lawns of Parliament Hill.
