There will be a Bay Days in Glace Bay this year.

Co-chair Dave MacKeigan said this year the festival will be held Aug. 2-5.

MacKeigan said in the past, Bay Days was held midJuly. Where people haven’t seen anything announced on Bay Days, there has been concern whether it was still going on.

MacKeigan said everything is a go but there are some changes including new dates.

“We decided to change it this year as the Rib Fest is held at the same time,” he said. “Rib Fest has grown to be so big we can’t compete with them.”

The former Bay Days chair and co-chair stepped down earlier this year. As a result, a meeting was held in the spring in an effort to get a new committee in place.

Bay Days has a new committee this year including MacKeigan and Ed Beaton as co-chairs.

The festival will open with a parade on Aug. 2 and festivities through to Aug. 5 will include all the old favourites — including the duck race, parade of sail, fireworks and other regular events — but will also have some new events.

MacKeigan said one addition includes a street party.

Members of bayitforward had Commercial Street closed down a couple years ago for a flea market and at Christmas for a community downtown light up and received tremendous crowds.

“We are going to grow on that success,” MacKeigan said.

“That just shows us people want to come downtown to celebrate and they are looking for events to happen in the downtown core. This will be the first time Commercial Street is closed down for a Bay Days street party.”

MacKeigan said people enjoy being down town when something is going on there.

The Bay Days committee is always looking for volunteers. Anyone interested can call MacKeigan at 902-574-1856.
