Councillor says Bayplex has not been hit by vandalism
‘The people of the area have been great’
A local councillor says there hasn’t been any vandalism at the Bayplex.
“People are being very respectful of the Bayplex, we haven’t had any issues or vandalism at all,” said Dist. 10 Coun. Darren Bruckschwaiger.
Bruckschwaiger said he is getting some questions from residents asking why all the windows are boarded up and he’s heard rumblings that there was vandalism to the building.
Bruckschwaiger said a small side window was discovered broken weeks ago but a second small side window was broken back when the facility was still operating.
The Cape Breton Reginal Municipality decided to board up the windows as a precautionary measure, he said.
Bruckschwaiger said any costs associated with any damage or vandalism to CBRM buildings or property would fall on the taxpayer.
“We are all paying for it whenever there is damage to public property,” he said.
“We have a certain envelope of money for the Bayplex and that’s all we have for it.”
Bruckschwaiger said they are happy that people are being respectful and that there haven’t been any issues.
“The people of the area have been great, there hasn’t been any vandalism at all to the building.”
Bruckschwaiger said everyone is eagerly waiting for the renovations to start and to see the facility back open again.
The municipality officially took over the Bayplex in November 2017.
The repairs — estimated at $9 million over two years — are to be cost-shared by the three levels of government.
The Bayplex is scheduled to reopen in September 2019.
