VIEW FROM RICHMOND

People come from afar to enjoy this island’s amenities

Why go away when there’s plenty to do here.

Summer has finally arrived in Cape Breton.

The sun is shining, the temperatures are great, there’s no need for a sweater at long last. With all the activities available here on the island, there is no need to venture too far from home.

Living in Cape Breton puts us at an advantage over a lot of areas in the country. Others planning their vacation have to travel hundreds or even thousands of miles to take in the activities that we have in our own backyards. Just look at all that water that surrounds us and consider the water adventures that await.

As locals living on one of the most sought after island destinations in the world, we have all the activities available to us without having to leave the county.

In Richmond alone, we have a number of excellent opportunities to get out and enjoy the water, either on the beautiful Bras d’Or Lake or on the amazing Atlantic Ocean coast line.

If sailing is your passion, Richmond has some excellent sailing tours, located right out of St. Peter’s. The sailing tours can be customised to meet your groups number and expectations.

Why not book a tour with either Captain Kerr from Richmond Adventure Planning by calling 902-631 3754, or Captain Silver of Cape Breton Sailing Adventure at 902-631-5050 for a sail on the Bras d’Or or out along the Atlantic coast. Both of these experienced captains can take you along some spectacular coastal vistas and they are also knowledgeable about the sea and bird life of the area. They can answer all your questions about the Bras d’Or Lake and it’s UNESCO Biosphere designation.

Richmond also offers great kayaking, surfing and paddle boarding opportunities. Kayak Cape Breton operating out of

Roberta is a perfect stop to enjoy a kayak adventure with one of the best instructors on Cape Breton Island, Eberhard Witt, who has more than 30 years of experience.

If surfing is something you would like to try make sure to take in Richmond’s surf program which runs throughout the summer, at Point Michaud Beach. Surf instructors and rentals are available at this lifeguard protected beach. The Bras d’Or Lake offers a great

location to do paddle boarding, and there are paddle board rentals available in St. Peter’s, Dundee and on Isle Madame.

If you need information on any of these great activities, feel free to stop in at the St. Peter’s Visitor Information Centre. Ann Marie Yorke has worked closely with the Richmond County tourism industry and has been a tourism information officer in St. Peter’s for 15 years.
