News of the murder of a former Glace Bay man has brought great grief to the community.

“It’s sad news,” said Nick Bonnar.

“I feel so bad — he’s a young man, this shouldn’t have happened.”

The Waterloo Regional Police Service confirmed they are investigating the murder of Shawn Yorke, a 45-year-old Kitchner, Ont., resident who is from Glace Bay.

Cherri Greeno, media relations co-ordinator, said police responded to a 911 call residence at 150 Elm Ridge Dr. on Sunday at 1:20 a.m. and located a 45-year old deceased male inside.

Greeno said the body of the deceased — since identified as Yorke — was sent for an autopsy.

“The results from that determined the death was a result

of a gunshot injury,” she said.

“We have determined it to be a homicide.”

At this time police say they believe the incident was targeted and are continuing to speak to neighbours.

Greeno said the victim did not live alone.

“There were other people in the residence at the time that we are currently looking to identify and speak to in connection with the homicide,” she said.

“We are doing a canvass of the area. Our emergency response unit is out searching rooftops and areas around the residence looking for any type of clues or anything that will assist in the investigation.”

In the meantime, Bonnar said the community is mourning the loss of a good man. Bonnar is friends with the Yorke family, grew up near them. He said that years ago the family ran a store in the No. 11 area.

“The store sold fries and had machines and everyone hung around it. This is a really good family, these are real good people that are well respected in the area.”

Bonnar said he always said hello to Shawn Yorke when he was home visiting.

“I know he was a real good guy,” he said.

“He has some really good friends here. They can’t get over it. They are in shock as he was a real good guy.”

Anyone with information about the investigation is asked to call 519-570-9777 ext. 8666, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
