The Sydney Sooners jumped out to a promising start to their weekend road series against the Halifax Pelham Canadians but returned home with a series loss under their belts.

The Sooners took game one of the Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League series with a 4-3 victory on Friday night but then lost both halves of a Saturday double-header by identical 6-4 scores.

In the series opener on Friday night, the Sooners jumped scored two in the first and fifth innings to take a

4-0 lead and hung on for the one run margin of victory.

Halifax scored one in the eighth and two more in the ninth but that was as close as the score would get. In the first game of Saturday’s double-header, Halifax led 6-0 after spreading runs over six innings before Sydney narrowed the gap with a four-run eighth. They would get no further though. Game 2 saw the Canadians score four in the sixth to erase a 1-0 lead that the Sooners had established in their half of the same inning. Their lead was extended to 5-2 after seven.

With those results in the books, the Sooners now have a record of 11-8 and sit in second place in league standings.

Third-place Halifax improved to 7-8.

Next game action for the Sooners will come on Saturday when they play a double-header against the Wildcats in Kentville.

Their next home game is July 27 when Halifax comes to town.
