Costly errors, walks and untimely hitting was the difference for the Cape Breton Ramblers at the Canadian Senior Little League Championship in Edmonton, Alta., on Monday.

The Ramblers were defeated 12-3 by the host Edmonton Cubs at the national tournament, dropping their record to 1-1.

“It was a tough loss, we had some unearned outs that got away from us and led to some long innings (in the field) and when we came back in we only saw four pitches at the plate and we were right back out for another long inning,” said Cape Breton head coach Josh Spooney.

“We held our own, we held the lead for the first couple of innings, but they (Edmonton) have a good hitting team and they field the ball well and their pitcher was really good today.”

Corson O’Rourke led the offense for the Ramblers with two singles, while Brett MacMullin had a double. Ethan Long, Gabe Haggett, Kendall MacQueen and Ethan Conrad added singles.

MacQueen shouldered the loss for Cape Breton.

Statistics for the Cubs were not available by press time.

On Sunday, Cape Breton opened the tournament with a 10-0 win over Rouyn-Noranda, the Quebec representative.

Breton Sibley had a two-run triple in the contest, while Conrad had a double and a single, and O’Rourke had two singles.

MacQueen, Parker Hanrahan and Brayden Boutilier combined for a one-hit shutout.

The Ramblers will continue play at the national tournament tonight when they take on Moose Jaw, the Saskatchewan representative. First pitch is scheduled for 9 p.m. Atlantic.

The tournament semifinals will be held on Saturday, with the championship game slated for Sunday.

All games will be streamed live by visiting the Canadian Senior Championship 2018 Facebook page.

The winner of the tournament will advance to the 2018 Senior Little League World Series in Easley, South Carolina, July 28-Aug. 4.
