CATHCART, Eva (Buchanan)

-

With great sorrow, the children of Eva Cathcart announce her passing, at home, on Monday, July 23 surrounded by her extended family. Born in Glace Bay on April 27, 1926, she was the seventh of eleven children of the late William Buchanan and Luetta Cameron.

Eva was a veteran of the Women’s Army Corps in the late 1940’s, and later became a well-known retail clerk at Woolworths and Metropolitan Store. She was a member of the Army and Navy Club and of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 40, where she served several terms as president and was awarded a life-time membership. She also spent several years preparing and serving meals at the Glace Bay Pensioners Club on Commercial Street.

Following the early death of her husband, she singlehandedly raised her seven children, teaching us about selflessness, hard work, and perseverance. Eva was a prodigious baker and was famous for her pies, shortbread, and home-made rolls. We will miss our Christmas goodies.

Aside from her parents, Eva was predeceased by husband, Cecil; companion, John Brown; son, Eric and daughter-in-law, Mary; sisters, Margaret (Austin) Shiebler, Hattie (Percy) Wilson, Norma (Al) Beaton and Lorraine (George) Beaton; brothers, Aubrey, Wallace, William (Jean), James and Eric; six nieces and nephews, and lifelong friend, Johneva Shea.

She is survived by sons, Bruce, Allan (Judy) and Aubrey (Robyn); daughters, Shelley (Noel) Cronin, Erna (Keith) Ferguson, Norma (Mark) Chiasson, and daughter-in-law, Heather; brother, Edward (Alma); sisters-in-law, Shirley and Edna, and good friends, Bev Lockman and Clarence Sampson.

Also left to mourn are grandchildren, Robyn Cathcart, Scott (Suzan) Cathcart, Joanna (Dan) Creamer, Meagan (Tyler) Dyck, Allison (Rickie) Cronin, Rebecca (Brad LeBlanc) Cathcart, Jeff Conn, Troy (Janelle) Steele, Kurt (Ashley) Ferguson, Nicole Ferguson, A.J., Abigail and Amarie Scantlin, and Augie Cathcart; great-grandchildren, Grant and Kate Cathcart, Emma and Ethan Creamer, Ceilidh and Carter Steele, Cameron and Norah Ferguson; numerous nieces and nephews, especially Lorraine (Sheldon) Shepherd and Anne (John) Hastie.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at the Glace Bay General and Cape Breton Regional Hospitals for their compassionate care of our mother these past few months. Special thanks to Drs. O’Brien, Kevin McNeil, Shelley O’Neill, Dr. D’Intino and her Palliative Care team for easing Mom’s journey, and to Charmaine Syms for her loving care.

Visitation will take place at T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay, on Friday, July 27 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral to be held at the funeral home on Saturday, July 28 at 10 a.m. with Father Norman MacPhee presiding.
