There’s a kit for that

Library features more than just books

- Rosalie Gillis Rosalie Gillis is the co-ordinator of community support for the Cape Breton Regional Library.

When people think of what the public library offers, they naturally think of books.

And the library does have lots of books in many different formats, but the Cape Breton Regional Library also has many items beyond books and DVDs that can be borrowed by our users.

Because libraries have locations in many small communities across Nova Scotia, librarians understand that the public library can provide much more specialized items for people in our communities.

The library loans tennis racquets in the summer and in winter loans snowshoes in CBRM and snowshoes, skis and more in Victoria County. People with vision impairment can borrow a DAISY (Digital Accessible Information System) Reader that will allow them to access digital audiobooks. There are always new items being offered.

The library has recently added autism tool kits which give individuals living with autism and their families/caregivers the opportunity to try particular items and tools to see if they are helpful. Like a book, the kits can be borrowed for two weeks at no charge. All you need is your library card. These kits are based on kits developed by Autism Nova Scotia in partnership with Halifax Public Libraries.

There are three kits available to be borrowed, the sensory tools kit, fidget tools kit, and visual tools kit. Each of the kits come with supporting material to guide individuals, families and caregivers towards getting the most out of their trial/borrowing period.

Fidget tools are items that can be helpful to some autistic individuals with focus, calming, and attention span. Fidget tools come in many different forms and what works for one individual may not have the same effect for another. Offering a fidget tool at certain times may help an individual concentrate on a task, environment, or be used for calming.

The visual tools kit is designed to support a person with autism with more relaxed transitions between activities throughout the day. Transitions can be challenging for many autistic individuals. By using a visual support that works for them, an individual can be more prepared for transitioning to another task or activity.

The sensory tools kit contains items which can be used for self-regulation. If a person is overwhelmed by the environment and needs a quiet activity or are seeking sensory feedback, these tools may provide the supports that they need.

The library is also developing family nature packs for Victoria County, in partnership with Victoria County Naturally Active’s Vince Forrestall and the Cape Breton Regional physical activity consultant, Wayne McKay. These packs will contain handson tools for families to use to get outside and explore nature. They will be available through the Baddeck and Ingonish Libraries and the Victoria County Bookmobile.

The themed packs will be filled with activities, resources, books and equipment that will give kids and adults a chance to explore the world around them. The packs that will be available to be borrowed will include beach packs, forest packs, bird packs, insect packs, astronomy packs, and wild crafting / backyard nature packs. The packs will be available late summer.

All items the Cape Breton Regional Library offers are available for loan with a library card. You can get your free card by visiting one of the 12 library branches or two bookmobiles that serve CBRM and Victoria County or online at www.cbrl. ca.
