Going rural
Group making impact with donations
The organization, 100 Women Who Care Rural Cape Breton, is getting ready to launch their second year on October 18 at the Strathspey Performing Arts.
Women from across rural Cape Breton from all walks of life are invited to get involved with this initiative that makes a difference in our communities.
Last year a group of volunteers got together to form a chapter of the international group, 100 Women Who Care. This local chapter, 100 Women Who Care Rural Cape Breton, successfully brought together more than 100 women back in October, 2017 in Mabou. The group was formed to raise awareness of, and contribute to, charitable organizations located in Richmond, Inverness, and Victoria Counties.
If you can answer yes to any of the following questions then considering joining:
Are you committed to helping others in our community but are stretched for time?
Do you want to be part of a powerful group of local women making an immediate, direct and positive effect on the lives of our neighbors?
Do you want 100 per cent of your donations to go directly to a local charity?
Do you want to learn more about the many worthy community service programs and organizations serving Cape Bretoners living in Richmond, Inverness, and Victoria Counties?
100 Women Who Care is a great way for women who don’t have a lot of extra time to make a big impact in the lives of those in need of help. Members of our local chapter meet for two hours once a year.
They are invited to nominate a local charitable organization that must be a registered charity. At the meeting, three randomly chosen charities from a list of nominees will give a five minute presentation about the work they do.
The women attending the meeting vote for one of the three presenting local charities, choosing the cause that made the most compelling presentation.
Each member will give a $100 cheque or cash to the selected organization.
Members receive a tax receipt directly from the winning charity.
At the first meeting in October 2017, three local charities got the chance to make a presentation – L’Arche Cape Breton Society, Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital Foundation, and Richmond County Early Childhood Education Association. After the members voted, the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital Foundation came through with the most votes in their plea for a new palliative care section of the hospital. They will be on hand at our annual meeting on October 18, 2018 to let us know exactly how they used the money in this new Palliative Care space – attendees will be treated to an overview of the impact their donations had last year!
