More than 140 golfers are expected to hit the links Sunday at Seaview Golf and Country Club for the Give on the Green Because You Care Scramble.

This is the first year for the event which has been organized by 11-year-old Sam Gracie, son of cancer survivor Tanya Gracie.

“I love raising money, because I know people, just like my mom, will need cancer care here in Cape Breton,” said Gracie, in a press release issued by the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation.

Last year, Gracie raised more than $3,600 for the founda- tion.

“We do this because it’s fun, but really we do it because it helps so many people,” he said.

All money raised will be used to continue to fund cancer research in Cape Breton.

“A tournament like this is exactly what I need to feel good about my community’s care for cancer,” said Ellen Mac- Kenzie, owner of title sponsor Foodland in Sydney Mines, who recently underwent a double mastectomy and eight rounds of chemotherapy. “I get emotional thinking that a 11-yearold is doing this to help cancer patients all over the world.”

Schwartz Furniture joins Foodland as title sponsors for the tournament.

In addition to golf, hockey is another fundraising sport for the foundation.

This year’s rendition of Because You Care Cup Road Hockey tournament to take place Sept. 15 and 16 in Membertou.

Presented by Aucoin’s Renovations and Advanced Insulations, the event is expected to attract more than 500 players.

Money raised from the event will help support clinical trials that will help determine new ways to treat and manage cancer.

“I went through my own cancer battle four years ago and clinical trials and research are the ways to make cancer treatments better for everyone to come,” said Tanya Gracie, Sam’s mother and Because You Care Cup committee member.
