Eskasoni Rebels winless at Eastern Canadian Softball Championsh­ip in Antigonish

A local softball team is still seeking its first victory at the 2018 Under-16 Eastern Canadian Softball Championsh­ip.

The Eskasoni Rebels have dropped their first four games of the four-day event in Antigonish.

The Rebels opened the tournament on Thursday with a 10-0 loss after four innings to Newfoundla­nd.

Mitchell Whelan had two singles, while Patrick Costigan had a double, and John Bradbury and Danny Campbell chipped in with singles for Newfoundla­nd. Logan Howlett had the win on the mound.

Clifford Cremo had a double for the Rebels, while Brett Denny had two singles and Sedric Marshall had a single. Marshall shouldered the loss.

Later in the day, Eskasoni was defeated 14-1 after four innings by the Wellesley Wildcats of Ontario.

Darcy Kuepfer led the offence for Ontario with five RBI, including a home run and a triple. Colby Switzer had a home run and a single, while Jarvis Kuepfer and Blair Bender added singles. Gavin Wilson picked up the win.

Cremo and Cole Stevens each posted singles for Eskasoni. Cremo suffered the loss.

On Friday, the Rebels suffered a pair of setbacks, losing 17-2 to the Memramcook Hawks of New Brunswick and 22-0 to Dutton of Ontario.

Eskasoni will continue the tournament on Saturday at noon against the host Antigonish A’s.

The tournament bronze medal game is set for Sunday at 11 a.m., followed by the championsh­ip game at 1:30 p.m., both games at the Dr. J.H. Gillis High School.
