County gears up for popular annual event

- Ann Marie Yorke

Pirates should keep this festival in mind when planning vacation.

Richmond County is gearing up for one of its most popular events, the St. Peter’s Pirate Days, September 13 to 16.

This is an event that, whether you are a kid or just a bit of a pirate at heart, you will not want to miss. It all begins on Thursday, with a Pirate Poker Walk, and Pirate Days Trivia Night, where the pirates will compete for treasure.

On Friday, take in the opening ceremonies and meet some of our special pirates. Be prepared to be entertained. This will be followed by Pirates Wing Night where you can join your fellow pirates in or out of costume and sit back and enjoy your favourite grog, tasty wings, and find out the top three pirate-decked businesses who will claim their prizes.

On Saturday, follow the first mate in a pirate run about town in the charity run, with more bounty to be had. Head

over to the Thieves’ Market, where specials will be offered for the taking around the village. Join the young scallywags (costumes optional) at the marina and see the fun in store for those young hooligans.

Later attend the pet parade at the Villa, and the under 16, Sprog Sprint Cardboard Boat Race, followed by the Scallywag Sea Skirmish Cardboard Boat Race.

What would a pirate festival

be without a pirate ship to board and sail. Join Captain John Bryson of the Amoeba on Friday and Saturday for scheduled one-hour sailing tours for up to 40 pirates at $20 per person.

Pillaging is in store at the Foodland Grocery as the pirate staff and members of the local 4-H Club package up food rations to fill the pirate boats to be hauled off to the local food bank. Bring your shillings and support this worthy cause. Looking for treasure come to the coastal market and see what gems await on Saturday and Sunday.

After all these activities you might have to fill your hollow leg with grub so meander over to the Pirate Grill for Pirate Burgers and Sea Dogs. Ye older pirates will enjoy the Landlubbers Happy Hour, with entertainment and grub. The fun will continue with a Pirate Patio Party, a Lights on the Lake Ships Parade and then party into the night at the Party Like a Pirate Bash.

On Sunday, clear the street to see the motley crew of Pirates on Parade.
