Memorial giving makes an impact

Making a difference while honouring loved ones

- Brad Jacobs

Dealing with the loss of a loved one is often painful and difficult. In dealing with this grief, you and your family will most likely plan a service to mourn and celebrate the person you love.

In planning a service to honour your loved one, there’s an opportunity for you to invite others to honour your loved one as well. A meaningful way to honour a family member or friend is by making a contribution to a charity through a memorial donation.

Welcoming donations to charity not only honours your loved one, but it helps strengthen your community. Often, people will choose a charity that was connected to your loved one. Perhaps they volunteered for the charity or made donations in the past. Maybe your loved one’s illness is connected to the charity’s mission, or maybe they had been helped by the charity throughout their life. Welcoming this donation helps your friends and family create a lasting impact on behalf on your loved one and leaves legacy in their name.

When a memorial donation is made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation, it honours a special life by helping to improve the lives of patients all over Cape Breton. Whether the donation is made to the Cancer Patient Care Fund, pediatrics, dialysis, the area of greatest need, or any area of care, it touches the lives of others to help deal with their illness. The foundation can also send a sympathy card to the family, indicating that a gift has been made in honour of the lost loved one.

The Cancer Patient Care Fund, for example, is 100 per cent donor funded and helps cancer patients alleviate the financial burden on their diagnosis. This fund may help with medication costs, travel, accommodations, or even income replacement during illness. Your loved one can have a significant impact on a cancer patient’s life, here in Cape Breton, by allowing patients to focus on their wellness.

Stop by the foundation to see how a memorial gift can make a difference today. If we’re not around, there are memorial packages assembled and available outside the foundation doors, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This includes a sympathy card that can be given to the family, indicating a gift has been made in honour of their lost family member. We can also send packages to you, by mail. This includes five donation cards, five sympathy cards and a return envelope.

Each year, more than 1,500 memorial gifts are made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation, leaving a legacy and truly impacting healthcare in Cape Breton. Many people choose to make multiple gifts each year. In a time of loss, we can play a role in commemorating your loved one.

When a loved one has faced heart health challenges, a gift can be made to support cardiac care – at home. When a family member uses renal dialysis at the Regional Hospital, a gift can be made to support the dialysis unit here in Cape Breton. If cancer takes a friend away, a donation can be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Centre – right here at home. Supporting world class healthcare in Cape Breton through memorial gifts to cardiac care, cancer centre, pediatrics, or any other department is a truly local and meaningful way to honour your loved one.

No matter how you decide to commemorate the life of your loved one, your act will help you grieve and can help your community. We are thankful to those that choose to give to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation during their time of mourning, for the impact they create in a time of loss.
