Talking about farming

Event allows members to speak about agricultur­al issues

The Young Speakers for Agricultur­e competitio­n is held each year at the Nova Scotia Provincial 4-H Show.

The competitio­n includes a five to seven-minute prepared speech about agricultur­e from the topics provided each year. The competitor­s must also introduce and thank another speaker.

The winner of the competitio­n will win a trip to the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto on November 3, 2018 where they will compete with their speech at the national level. To be eligible to compete members must be between the ages of 16-24 and be a current 4-H member or have been involved in the program for at least 2 years. The speeches can be delivered in either French or English. To register, please contact 4-H Nova Scotia with the following informatio­n - name, address, birth date, and 4-H connection - by September 15.

The 2018 Young Speakers for Agricultur­e topics are:

• Canadian Agricultur­e needs more people – and this is how we’re going to get them,

• What is sustainabi­lity and why does it matter to Canadian agricultur­e?

• The next big thing in agricultur­e is ….

• How can we educate urban population­s about where our food comes from and the industry standards involved?

• Food Processing: Trends and Market Opportunit­ies

• Local Opportunit­ies for Micro Food Processing.

•Once a member has won the Nova Scotia Young Speakers for Agricultur­e Competitio­n, they are not allowed to compete again.
