GRACIE, Marion Olive (nee Lewis)

-

It is with great sadness that we the family of Marion Olive Gracie announce her passing at home in Sydney, Nova Scotia on Wednesday, August 22, 2018. We love you Mama and will miss your presence deeply.

Mom was the daughter of the late George Jacob Lewis and Sadie Lewis (MacKillop).

Mom was a Registered Nurse for many years having graduated from the Glace Bay General hospital, Class of 1954. Though she worked plenty when we were young, she always found time to be a dedicated mother to her six children. Mom loved the arts and played piano, organ, autoharp and singing. When we were young, Mom loved sitting around the piano or organ with all six of us, especially at Christmas time, and we would sing together. She also loved making a multitude of different crafts over the years for our home and as gifts. She was proud of her many varied creations, such as her crocheted afghans, apple dolls, and varied household decorations; and well she should be. They were works of love and were beautiful. As Mom grew older, she loved doing the daily Cape Breton Post record crossword puzzles and cryptoquotes. Her favourite TV programs were Anderson Cooper, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. She believed all of these things kept her current, her brain active and challenged, and they were something she looked forward to dearly every day for as long as she was able.

Mom is survived by her husband of 62 years, James Benjamin Gracie; three daughters, Michelle Power (Wensley), Cyndee MacPhee (Jim), Joanne Dunford (Gary); and three sons, Jimmy Gracie, Aubrey Gracie (Tracey Fleet) and Bradley Gracie. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren; her sister, Carol Ball (George) and her sister-inlaw, Rita Lewis. She leaves behind many nieces and nephews as well.

Besides her parents, Mom was predeceased by her brothers, Aubrey Lewis, Allister Lewis and by her sister, Minerva MacDougall.

We wish to express our sincere gratitude for the care and support provided by the Palliative Care Team in particular, Dr. A.F. D’Intino, Linda Murphy, Dr. Kodagoda and the kind and compassionate care provided by the VON nurses.

The family will welcome visitors from 12-2 p.m. at S. W. Chant and Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney on Saturday, August 25, 2018. A celebration of her life will take place following, at 2 p.m. in the funeral home Chapel with Rev. Sheldon Chant to officiate.

Donations in loving memory of Marion Olive Gracie can be made to a charity of your choice.
