Sydney Sooners edge Manitoba at men’s national championsh­ip in British Columbia

Sooners in action yesterday at senior baseball nationals.

The Sydney Sooners picked up their first win of the Baseball Canada men’s national championsh­ip, Friday afternoon, edging Manitoba 6-5 at Lambrick Park in Victoria, B.C.

Manitoba opened the scoring in the game with two runs in the top of the first inning, but the Sooners would respond right away, scoring five runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-2 lead.

Both teams added single runs in the fourth inning, making the score 6-3.

Manitoba (1-1) cut the Sooners lead to one in the final inning, scoring two runs in the seventh, but that’s as close as they would come.

Sean Ferguson, who began tournament with three hits against Tecumseh on Thursday, powered the offense for the Sooners with two hits and two RBI.

Meanwhile, Phil Brown also chipped in offensivel­y with two hits, while Jordan Shepherd had a double and an RBI.

James Zamko had three hits, including a double, a home run and two RBIs, for Manitoba. Ty Paddock and Dunc Paddock added two hits apiece for the losing club.

Sheldon MacDonald picked up the complete-game win on the mound for Sydney, striking out three Manitoba batters.

Zane Sawyer allowed five runs in three innings of work for Manitoba. Matt Mutcheson came into the game in relief, going three innings with one strikeout.

The Sooners were 1-1 at the national tournament as they entered a game against the host Victoria late Friday night. Results were not available at press time.

Sydney will finish the round robin against New Brunswick at 3 p.m. Atlantic time on Saturday.

The tournament semifinals are set for Sunday afternoon, followed by the bronze medal game at 8 p.m. and the championsh­ip game at 11 p.m.
