Glace Bay full of good news
It is very tiring to hear people say they are disappointed with our elected representatives, often singling out MLA Geoff MacLellan and MP Rodger Cuzner.
Our town is enjoying the kind of revival that is unprecedented in my life time, and yet we still have people whining out the same sour tune. Sadly, many of those whiners haven’t lifted a finger to do anything positive for this town since they drew their first breath.
There are 338 members of parliament, 51 members of the provincial legislature and 12 municipal councillors — for a total of 401 elected representatives. Each are looking for a piece of their respective political pies. Yes, sometimes our members wear a larger hat, but, so do others. We are but one of many fish ponds looking for a handout. This time the handouts have been dead on.
The point that has been missed by this negative mindset is the level of political synergy that has evolved, during recent years. Never have I witnessed the degree

Our main tourist attraction, the Miner’s Museum, has been renovated. The renovations to our beautiful entertainment venue, the Savoy Theatre, are well under way. The money has been confirmed for the renovations to our main recreational and social centre, Bayplex. I always regarded the name Bayplex to a “copy-cat” name’. Changing it back to the Miner’s Forum, will properly link it to our past, our present and our future. Our hospital will undergo an extensive expansion, with added facilities and services. The first phase of the Glace Bay Commons has been completed. It is a wonderful facility that provided a summer of excellent dry and wet play activities. A new police station will soon be constructed on the old post office lot. The streets of our town are in better condition than those of most other areas.
The parking areas at Convergys are filled to near capacity. At this time of the year, our harbour is the among the most frequently photographed small harbour in Nova Scotia. Considerable government money went into the construction and renovations of those wharves and harbour dredging. The negotiated agreement with China a couple of years ago has stimulated lobster prices.
In our case, the glass is more than half-full. It’s time to take another look and count our blessings. Hats off to our elected people and thanks for a job well done. Allister Moore Glace Bay
