-

The memory of a much-loved Glace Bay man has resulted in an annual tournament making a difference in the lives of local students.

A total of $3,000 was raised through the 15th annual Butch Kelloway Memorial Men’s SloPitch Tournament held recently in Glace Bay.

In total the tournament has raised in excess of $50,000 which has been handed out to Glace Bay High School students in the form of more than 100 scholarships.

The event is hosted annually by members of the Coors Light Bulldogs team in honour of Kelloway, a former member of the club, who died in a motor vehicle accident in April 2004.

A total of 12 teams participated this year with the Main Event Beverage Room as cosponsor and the hosting venue for the closing ceremony.

Kelloway graduated from Glace Bay High School in 1997, was a member of the Glace Bay Colonels who captured the 1991Canadian Major Little League title. The Colonels were inducted into the Cape Breton Sports Hall of Fame in 2017.

Kelloway resided in the Caledonia area of Glace Bay and was a member of the Caledonia Police Boys Club for several years. He also attended both CBU and St. FX and was employed at a local call centre at the time of his death.

This year’s scholarship recipients were Drew Baxter, Sarah MacNeil, Ryan Gass, Emily MacNeil, James Hayes, Colin MacLeod, Payton McPhee, Brett Roper, Emily Clarke and Gracie Hanrahan.
