The Cape Breton Marlins captured the Nova Scotia Intermediate ‘A’ provincial championship on Sunday.

The Marlins defeated the Inverness Athletics 7-6 and 12-2 in the championship games at the Nicole Meaney Memorial Ball Park in Sydney Mines.

Cape Breton, who had only played six games prior to the tournament, opened the championship with a 9-3 loss to the Athletics on Friday, meaning the club had to beat the Inverness squad twice to win the provincial title.

“We came out a little flat in the first game and at that point we couldn’t lose again,” said Marlins coach Paul MacDonald. “If we would have lost again, there wouldn’t have been a championship because Inverness would have gone 4-0.”

In other round robin action, the Marlins pounded the Weymouth Firebirds 20-10 on Friday evening, before defeating the Kennetcook Braves 9-3 and Little Anse Hawks 6-4 on Saturday.

In the first championship game, the Marlins trailed the Athletics, who finished first in the Richmond Amateur Baseball Association standings, 6-3, before scoring four runs in the top of the seventh inning for the win.

In the second championship game, Cape Breton opened the

scoring with six runs in the top of the third inning. Bryden Meaney had a two-run single in the inning, followed by RBI singles from Nathan Livingston, Cyril Eavis and Chris Osmond.

Cape Breton would add six more runs in the game.

“I’m proud of the guys, they played well all weekend and I’m happy to see them win,” said MacDonald.

In other provincial action, the Glace Bay Miners lost 3-1 in the semifinals to the Weymouth Firebirds in the bantam ‘AA’ Tier 1 provincial championship in Kennetcook on Sunday. The Miners went 3-0 in the tournament round robin with wins over Clark’s Harbour, Amherst and Hants North.

In the mosquito ‘AA’ provincial tournament in Kentville, the Sydney Sooners went 3-0 in the round robin, and later lost in the championship game to the Kentville Wildcats 10-4 on

Sunday. As for the Cape Breton West Warriors, they went 0-3 at the tournament.

The Sydney Mines Ramblers were scheduled to play in the bantam ‘AA’ Tier 2 provincial championship last weekend, however did not attend, according to Baseball Nova Scotia.

Provincial tournaments will continue this weekend with events scheduled in the mosquito, peewee and bantam divisions.
