Terry Fox Run needs your support

-

With the arrival of September, many of us are thinking of the departure of summer and the beginning of the autumn season. Vacations are over and school resumes.

But, for me, there is another important September moment. For 38 years now, the Terry Fox Run for cancer research has taken place on the third Sunday of the month.

Terrance Stanley Fox wanted to make a difference after he was diagnosed with cancer. He set out to run a marathon a day to raise awareness and money for cancer research. Terry saw how this disease destroyed lives, dreams and families. He lost his battle but implored Canadians from coast to coast to take up the torch and fulfil his dream to one day end cancer in our world.

Each September, as I do preparations for the Terry Fox Run in New Waterford, I continue to see and hear of someone new in our community who has been diagnosed with cancer or who has sadly passed away from this illness. Researchers are making tremendous progress though. Many cancers are more manageable and people are living longer after their diagnoses and treatments.

But, as Terry said himself: “Someday the suffering must stop.”

Probably everyone who is reading this has been touched by cancer, as it shows no preference to age, gender or race. Everyone knows that Cape Breton has one of the highest cancer rates in Canada. We owe it to our children and grandchildren to do our part in this ongoing battle against cancer.

On Sunday, Sept. 16, please consider attending a Terry Fox Run/ Walk in your community. You may choose to walk, run or bike, or perhaps just make a monetary donation to the cause. Every dollar counts in this community effort to end cancer one and for all. Be a part of Terry’s Marathon on Hope. Bobby Aucoin Co-ordinator
