Change of practice venue for Second Wind

Community band opens 25th season today

- BY CAPE BRETON POST STAFF

The Second Wind Community Concert Band will be opening their 25th season with a slight change in plans.

Although scheduled for a registration meet and greet and first practice on today at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. respectively, the location has been changed to the Point Edward Seniors Hall on the Point Edward Highway (Highway 239) on the water side. Look for the sign and a driveway between the house numbers 2548 and 2524.

To join this group, you need to own your own music stand, instrument and be able to play a wind or percussive instrument at a Grade 9/high school proficiency level. If you haven’t been in a concert band but have one to two years experience on an instrument, attend a session to see if this works for you.

If you’re planning on attending, bring your own instrument, a music stand and the registration fee of $150 for the season. High school students and under can join for free.

Shortly after rehearsals begin, Second Wind will host its annual Cape Breton Community BandFest over the weekend of Sept. 21-23. This event brings in special guest conductors and clinicians from around the Maritimes as well as fellow community band members from around the Maritimes. This event will feature two levels of bands. The MacKay Band will be for those with one to two years of experience on their instrument and the DesBarres Band is for more seasoned players.
