Parents need to set better example

-

Who knew that it was so difficult for the police to give someone a breathalyzer test.

According to the Cape Breton Regional Police Service chief, a person must show obvious, outward signs of being drunk. Apparently, a young person leaving a drinking party and hitting someone with his car is not grounds enough to give a breathalyzer.

I am surprised we have not heard from MADD on this. I would think that hundreds of underage drinkers could all be charged with breaking the law. Easy to find them. They were all in one spot.

Apparently, Sydney has many outdoor areas where kids go to drink. So why aren’t the police shutting them down? For all those who say they will only find another place to go, I say at least make it difficult for them. I agree with the chief that this island has a huge drinking problem.

The media and comedy movies of today portray getting drunk, especially by women, something young girls should aspire to. Women’s liberation has coma long way from wanting equal pay and equal work. Now a woman is not complete unless they can disrespect herself to the point of being equally as crude, obnoxious and inebriated.

Do parents not realize how the way you act and talk influences your children? How many of you talk about getting drunk after work to have fun and so many women talk about having that glass of wine to relax. You are showing your kids that to be cool, have fun or just simply relax, they need alcohol. It always astounds me that no matter how many homes are destroyed by alcohol so many of the kids become alcoholics. Just like mom or dad.

The latest medical study on drinking says no amount of alcohol is good for you. Even the benefits of that glass of wine for your health are outweighed by cancer and other health risks.

I am hoping that many of the students’ parents stayed sober themselves that night and drove to pick their kids up from the party. For those who let their childen drive home drunk or go in a car with a drunk driver, you should be thanking God that it wasn’t your child in that tragic accident. Terry Charlene MacKay Sydney
