History repeats itself in Port Morien

- Yvonne Kennedy Homeville

Fair Day 2018 in the seaside village of Port Morien is one for the history books.

As I observed the various activities during this annual event, I had an overwhelming sense that history was repeating itself. In the past, people of my vintage (another word for older folks) were the “go-to” workers for the fair. Now, the Morienites who were just babies 30 years ago are doing the grunt work and telling the older generation to relax and enjoy the activities. The older generation is imparting their skills and knowledge to the next generation and that’s how it should be in the big scheme of things.

Under the capable leadership of Katherine MacDonald, her crew of workers organized all the events and worked tirelessly to make the fair a huge success. This crew must have Mother Nature on their side because it was one of the hottest days on record.

On the morning of the fair, there is always a doll carriage/ bicycle parade for the children. What fun it is to see the excited youngsters parading down the side street in their well-decorated modes of transportation.

As I was enjoying the sights, it suddenly struck me that the youngster were being cheered on by their parents who were in the same parade when they were children. The grandparents were proudly watching their children and grandchildren. Memories were being made and it just can’t get any better than that. What an intergenerational event!

Pride in our children is a good thing and this parade was just one of the many family memories being made that day.

Pulling off an event of this magnitude requires a team of volunteers and the new fair team did a great job.

A few years ago, the Morien Fair was on the verge of closure but it has continued to be a well-anticipated annual tradition. When this younger generation decided that they wanted the fair experience for their children, they knew they had to volunteer to make it happen.

Kudos to them!
