-

“A life well lived”

It is with heartfelt sadness that we the family announce the death of our loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother Evelyn Shears at the Glace Bay General Hospital on September 19, 2018 after a brief illness, surrounded by her loving family.

Evelyn was born August 12, 1925, at Birch Grove, Cape Breton, she was the daughter of the late Sam and Alice Willetts. Evelyn’s life was one characterized by love of family, compassion for others, a fine sense of humour and a zest for life.

Mom was a valued member of St Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Glace Bay, an active member of the church choir and Lady’s Guild. Mom was a proud veteran of World War Two and as a member of Branch 3, The Royal Canadian Legion, she held many positions in the Legion Executive. She rarely missed a Remembrance Day Parade where she marched proudly with her comrades in arms. She was a long-time member of the Jubilee Rebekah Lodge (#14). Most Wednesdays found Mom enjoying competitive bowling with a group of fun-loving ladies at the Glace Bay Bowling Alley, a pastime she continued until just 2 years ago. Mom loved to travel and some of her many trips included several excursions to visit 1st cousins in England, a tour of Italy, with her late sister-in-law, Catherine (Babe) Kavanagh, trips to Texas, Newfoundland and Alberta, Bermuda, Belgium, Holland and France and of course shopping excursions to the White Mountains of Vermont. For recreation Mom often played piano and passed on her musical talents to several of her children. She was an avid fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and wore the jersey with pride.

In addition to her parents Mom was predeceased by her husband, Angus Shears (1998); sisters, Anita Pettis (1998), Pearl (1939) and twin brother, Earl, in infancy (1926).

She is survived by her children; Linda Maclean (Nelson), Arthur, David (Donna), Barry (Margaret), Earl (Arnette) and George (Michele) ; grandchildren, Cory Maclean, Moraig and Fiona Shears, Andrew, Shears, Alison and Siobhan Shears, Dale and Cory Burke, Sarah and Maddison Shears, great-grandchild, Brea McKenzie, and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation for the late Evelyn Shears will be held on Saturday September 22, 2018 from2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Patten Funeral Home 71 Union St. Glace Bay. Celebration of life will be held on Sunday September 23, 2018 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church Brookside St Glace Bay.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Glace Bay General Hospital for their compassionate care and especially to Dr. Gordon Spencer, Evelyn’s favourite physician.
