PETERS, Herbert John (Herbie)

-

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father and brother, Herbert John Peters (66) of Sydney on Wednesday, September 26, 2018.

Herb was the son of Bob and Genevieve (Heron) Peters of Sydney River.

Like his father, Herb had a great interest in hockey, and a love the Leafs. He dreamed of the day they would repeat their success of 1967. Herbie’s enthusiasm for operating heavy machinery came from John Burns of MacRae Ave. This lead to a lifelong career and a passion for heavy equipment operation. Over his fifty years of experience Herb worked with various private contractors, the Department of Transportation in Sydney River, and with his cousins at Peters’ Construction on Mira Road in Sydney. Herbie was an avid reader; old westerns were his favorite. A true Cape Bretoner, Herbie enjoyed a spirited political debate, and always believed that “Red is right”! Above all else, Dad loved his family and friends. He liked nothing more than to be able to brighten the day of others with a kind word, a joke, or offering a bit of help. Always kind and thoughtful Herbie continues to help others by being an organ and tissue donor.

Herbie is survived by his children, Tiffany (Paul MacNeil) and Bobby (Kristy Spawn) Peters. He is also survived by his sisters, Earlene (Grant) McGarrigle, Marguerite (Dale) Shelden, Shirley (Wayne) Aucoin, Roberta Coyne; and brothers, Donnie and John as well as 13 nieces and nephews.

Herbie was predeceased by his parents, Bob and Genevieve.

Visitation will be Sunday, September 30th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at S.W. Chant Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney.

A celebration of Herbie’s life will be held on Monday, October 1st at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Sheldon Chant to officiate. Cremation has taken place.

In lieu of flowers, because of his love for animals, donations may be made in memory of Herbie Peters to the Cape Breton SPCA.

Messages and memorials may be directed to the family at www. chantfuneralhome.ca.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of S.W. Chant and Son Funeral Home.
