With great sadness, the family of Sonya (MacLeod) MacKenzie announces her passing on Wednesday, September 26, 2018, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

Sonya was the daughter of the late George and Margaret (Dickson) MacLeod.

Born 1935 in Sydney, Sonya was raised in her much-loved South Bar. She graduated from the Victoria General School of Nursing in 1957, beginning her career in Halifax, before moving back to Sydney, where she worked at the City Hospital and ultimately with the VON, until she retired in 2001.

Sonya kept active in the community by volunteeri­ng for various positions within her church, United Heritage Church, Sydney, as well as the IODE. She loved family, gardening and socializin­g and also enjoyed going to movies and events with friends.

Sonya is survived by her sons, Murray, Angus (Lindsay) and Ian; grandsons, Merrick and Calder; brothers, Wayne (Judy) and George; nieces, nephews and grandnephe­ws, all of whom brought her great joy.

Besides her parents, Sonya was predecease­d by her husband, Colin MacKenzie and her sisterin-law, Donna.

Arrangemen­ts are under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Sunday, September 30 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m.

Funeral service will be held at the United Heritage Church on Monday, October 1 at 11 a. m., with Rev. Rosemary Godin officiatin­g. Interment in Hillcrest Cemetery, South Bar.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.
