Local athletes on a humanitarian mission

-

Every month our Port Morien Country Market has a loyal following who have become wonderful supporters of Branch 55 Legion.

To lend a hand to other community groups, such as church organizations and youth and school groups, we offer the sponsorship of the bake table free of charge.

It’s a win-win situation. The sale of homemade treats is a big attraction for the market and an excellent fundraiser for the various groups.

Last month, I was approached by a parent for the Caribbean Goodwill Baseball Tour. Local kids from all over Cape Breton are travelling to the Dominican to play ball in the local communities. They are bringing supplies to local schools and hospitals to help children who are less fortunate.

Many of the children that these young Cape Bretoners will meet are living lives that are completely different from the lives of our children.

Even though the childhood poverty rate is high in Cape Breton, the level of poverty in some of these communities will surely be a life-changing experience for these baseball players.

Baseball is a sport that transcends cultures. This baseball team is asking people who may have baseball equipment kicking around to donate the gear to help these under-privileged children in a faraway land.

Doesn’t this just warm your heart that this baseball team is reaching out to help other children? What great ambassadors for Canada!

Our monthly market has become a greatly anticipated destination. Some customers come to stock up on delicious home baking, others want to do a bit of early Christmas shopping from the vendors and others are in search of that special treasure at the downstairs flea market.

Drive out to the seaside village of Port Morien on Saturday, Oct. 6. from 2-4 p.m. to support these young baseball players on their humanitarian visit to the Dominican and enjoy an afternoon of great shopping.
