Sydney Sooners look to capture senior baseball league title this weekend

SYDNEY – The Sydney Sooners are one win away from repeating as Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League champions.

The Sooners currently lead the best-of-seven championsh­ip series with the Dartmouth Moosehead Dry 3-2, with Game 6 being played Saturday at 7 p.m. at Beazley Field in Dartmouth.

The Sydney squad defeated the Moosehead Dry 8-1 in Game 5 at Susan McEachern Memorial Ball Park in Sydney last Sunday. With a win, the Sooners will not only win the league championsh­ip, but secure its spot in the 2019 Canadian Men’s Senior Baseball Championsh­ip. Game 7 of the league final, if necessary, is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. in Dartmouth.

Pirates drop first game of season with loss to Penguins

EAST HANTS – The Strait Pirates suffered their first loss of the season on Friday night.

The Port Hawkesbury-based Pirates were edged 4-3 by the East Hants Penguins at the East Hants Sportsplex.

Kublek’s second-half goal leads Marauders past Panthers in high school soccer action

SYDNEY MINES – Amy Kublek scored two goals, including the game-winner with only minutes to play, as the Memorial Marauders downed the Glace Bay Panthers 3-2 in Cape Breton High School Soccer League girls action at Memorial High School on Friday.

Olivia Lee also scored for the hometown Marauders. Alexandra Barrett netted both goals for the Panthers.

In other action on Friday, Chloe Parsons posted a shutout as the Riverview Reds blanked the Breton Education Centre Bears 4-0 at Riverview High School in Coxheath.

Janelle Tierney notched two goals for the Reds, while Becca LeBlanc and Emanuella Orrego chipped in with single markers for RHS. Middle school and high school soccer action continues on Saturday in Sydney. See schedule in Saturday’s scoreboard section.

Junior Miners host Bulldogs Saturday; Junior Eagles on the road

SYDNEY — A pair of local Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League teams will be in action this weekend.

The Kameron Junior Miners will host the Antigonish Farmers’ Mutual Jr. Bulldogs on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Membertou Sport and Wellness Centre.

As for the Eskasoni Junior Eagles, the team will be on the road for a pair of games, starting Saturday in Liverpool against the Privateers at 7 p.m. The club will also play the East Hants Penguins on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the East Hants Sportsplex.

Highlander­s host Armada in Port Hawkesbury; Jets on the road

PORT HAWKESBURY – The Cabot Highlander­s will hold their Nova Scotia Minor Midget ‘AAA’ Hockey League home-opener on Satur day.

The expansion franchise will host the Bedford Basin Armada at 6:30 p.m. at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre. The team currently has an 0-2 record.

The Cape Breton Jets (0-4) will also be in action this weekend. The team will play the Valley Wildcats at 3 p.m. in Berwick, before facing the Dartmouth Voyageurs at the Shearwater Arena at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Tradesmen, Islanders hit the road for Thanksgivi­ng weekend

SYDNEY – The Cape Breton Unionized Tradesmen and Cape Breton West Islanders will continue their regular seasons this weekend on the road. The Tradesmen will be in Bridgewate­r to play the UPS Store South Shore Mustangs on Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre.

As for the Islanders, the Port Hood-based team will play the Kohltech Valley Wildcats on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Berwick, before facing the Dartmouth Steele Subaru Major Midgets at 1:15 p.m. on Sunday in Dartmouth.

Inverness County man wins road racing championsh­ip

WEST BAY ROAD – Avery Hart of West Bay Road was successful in winning the 2018 LWSS 250 Atlantic Championsh­ip as part of the Atlantic Roadracing League on Sept. 25.

Along with winning the race, the Inverness County man also finished the league season with 235 points. He finished the year 44 points ahead of the league’s runner-up.
