Cape Bretoners say no to buying pot: poll

-

The majority of Cape Bretoners will not buy recreational cannabis even though it is now legal to do so across the country, according to an informal Cape Breton Post poll.

Almost 48 per cent of those who responded to the survey about the purchase of the drug that became legal on Wednesday selected “no” out of several voting options presented to them.

“While not against legalizing pot, I feel very strongly that this move will only make it easier for underage people to have access to pot,” wrote David Gilmet in the comments section of the poll.

“This is nothing new. We (had) seen it with alcohol and other products.”

The move will only make the job of law enforcement harder, he added.

Just over 37 per cent of respondents selected “yes” as their voting option, followed by “possibly” at about 7.8 per cent and “probably” at over 5.8 per cent.

Never, no, “not from NSLC” and “no pot of any kind ever” were among the other notes added through the “other” voting option in the poll.

There were no comments offered in favour of the legal purchase of cannabis, at least through the polling site.

Cannabis sales began Wednesday at 12 NSLC stores across the province, including the outlet in Sydney River where people lined up to make a cannabis purchase.

Poll results were tallied over an estimated 24-hour period from 1 p.m. Tuesday until 1 p.m. Wednesday.
