Riverview, Sydney Academy girls advance to high school soccer league championsh­ip series

SYDNEY – Maddie Coleman and Becca LeBlanc both scored three goals to power the Riverview Reds to a 10-0 win over the Glace Bay Panthers in Cape Breton High School Soccer League girls’ semifinal action at Recreation Park on Wednesday.

Lenee Sampson had two goals, while Emanuella Orrego and Jacelyn Clarke added single markers for the Reds.

Chloe Parsons posted the shutout for the Coxheath school. At Memorial High School in Sydney Mines, Katie Hasiuk netted four goals to lead the Sydney Academy Wildcats past the Memorial Marauders 6-2 in semifinal action.

Alesha Hoban and Hannah MacKinnon rounded out the scoring for Sydney Academy.

Olivia Lee potted both goals for Memorial.

In the boys’ championsh­ip series, the Riverview Reds and Sydney Academy Wildcats tied 3-3.

John Patterson had two goals for the Reds, while Kinnon Williams also chipped in with a goal.

Issac Reynolds, Colin MacArthur and Quinn Gouthro replied with goals for the Wildcats.

In Division 2 girls’ action, Breton Education Centre defeated Richmond Academy 6-1 at Veterans’ Memorial Turf in New Waterford.

Caleigh MacPherson had a hat trick for the hometown Bears. Tessa Dowie, Emma Gale and Abby MacNeil also found the back of the net for BEC.

Ellie MacAulay had the lone marker for the Richmond County school.

BEC will now play Dalbrae Academy in the championsh­ip game for the Highland region title. The date and location for the game has not been announced.

In junior varsity girls’ action, Breton Education Centre hosted Riverview in New Waterford. Score results were not available at press time.
