It is with broken hearts that we announce the death of Donald Charles Puddicombe on Sunday, October 21, 2018, at the age of 91. Don passed away peacefully at the Cove Guest

Home, where he resided since May of this year. Born December 14,

1926, in Sydney, he was the son of the late William and May (Carson) Puddicombe.

Don retired from Sydney Steel in 1986 after more than 40 years. He was a member of the Sydney Steelworke­rs & Pensioners Club, where he always enjoyed playing pool, a game of darts or cards. On a warm sunny day, you could always find him waxing and polishing his car, something he took great pride in. He was happiest when surrounded by family and friends, always the prankster and jokester in the room. He had a smile for everyone and was a true gentleman.

He is survived by his stepdaught­er, Joanne Marinelli, Sydney, with whom he resided for the past 23 years; daughters, Arlene (Charlie) Cote, Ardith (Ed) O’Neil, both of Montreal, QC, Jo-Ann Gauntley, Edson, AB; sons, Glenn and Robin, Montreal, QC; sister, Frances Coish (late Donald), Guelph, ON; four grandchild­ren, Cindy, Richard, Nathan and Mandi, and four great-grandchild­ren. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Patricia (Dannie) Dunlop, Howie Centre; brother-in-law, David MacIntyre, Southside Boularderi­e.

Also left to mourn his loss is special nephew, Bill and Shirley Puddicombe and family, Frenchvale, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Don was predecease­d by his loving wife, Marie (Marinelli); son, Bruce; grandson, Jason; brother, Robert; sister, Jennie Mallindine (late Jim); brothers-in-law, Joseph (late Lois), Robert, John R. (Rudy); sisters-in-law, Bernice MacDougall (late Murdock), Muriel MacIntyre, Donna Marinelli.

The family would like to thank the Cove Guest Home for their exemplary care and compassion shown to Don over the last five months, and also to City Homemakers for their support and assistance over the last four years. Heartfelt thanks and appreciati­on also to Diane McDonald, Don’s private caregiver for the past three years, whose support and care was unwavering.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place Friday, October 26, 2018, from 1-3 p.m. at S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. Service to follow at 3 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Rev. Sheldon Chant to officiate. Reception to follow. Burial to take place at Forest Haven Cemetery following reception. Memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or a charity of choice.
