Seitz shorthande­d goal leads Wildcats past Screaming Eagles

A shorthande­d goal by Dylan Seitz at 1:34 of the second period proved to be the game-winner as the Moncton Wildcats edged the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles 4-3 in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action at Centre 200 on Tuesday.

Jeremy McKenna, Tristan DeJong and Jacob Stewart also found the back of the net for the Wildcats (12-3-2-0).

Gabriel Proulx, Mathias Laferrière and Egor Sokolov replied with goals for the Screaming Eagles (8-8-0-1).

Francis Leclerc made 29 saves between the pipes for Moncton. Kevin Mandolese stopped 17 of 21 shots for Cape Breton.

The Wildcats opened the scoring early in the game with McKenna’s 11th goal of the season at 1:23. Moncton would extend its lead near the midway mark of the opening stanza with goals by DeJong and Stewart, before Proulx cut the Moncton lead to two at the 11-minute mark.

Seitz’s goal would give Moncton a 4-1 lead, until Laferrière responded at 13:57 of the second period on the power play for his seventh goal of the year.

Big Russian forward Sokolov pulled the Screaming Eagles to within one late in the third period, but the Wildcats would hold on for the road win.

Cape Breton outshot Moncton 32-21, while going 1-for-4 on the power play. The Wildcats went 0-for-3 with the manadvanta­ge.

Attendance for the game was 1,765.

The Screaming Eagles will return to action this weekend when they host the defending Memorial Cup champion Acadie-Bathurst Titan. The teams will meet Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m. at Centre 200 in Sydney.
