Cape Breton Capers players receive major AUS awards, all-star team selections

Four members of the Cape Breton Capers men’s and women’s soccer teams received major Atlantic University Sport awards on Wednesday.

In the men’s division, thirdyear defender Peter Schaale was named the league’s most valuable player. In 12 games with the Capers this season, the native of Bernkastel-Kus, Germany, had five goals, including one game-winner, and two assists for seven points. Schaale was also named to the first allstar team.

Capers head coach Deano Morley received the AUS coach of the year honours for a second consecutiv­e season and third time in his career. Morley guided the Cape Breton squad to a 10-0-2 record, finishing atop the AUS standings. The Capers scored 36 goals, while allowing only five goals against in 12 games.

In the women’s division, fourthyear midfielder Ciera Disipio captured the league’s most valuable player award for the second consecutiv­e year. The Ottawa, Ont., resident led the AUS in goals (10) and points (15). She becomes the fifth Capers player

to be named the conference­s MVP and the second player to win the honour in back-to-back seasons, behind only Karolyne Blain (2013 and 2014). Disipio was also named to the AUS first all-star team.

First-year forward/midfielder Erin Freeman claimed the rookie of the year honour. The business student from Halifax appeared in all 12 games in her freshman season, tallying three goals and a league-leading six assists for nine points. She becomes the ninth player from a Cape Breton team to take home the award. She was also named to the AUS first all-star team.

Other Capers players were also represente­d on various AUS allstar teams.

For the men, Daniel Pritchard, Marcus Campanile, Cory Bent and Stuart Heath were named to the first all-star team, while Ben Jackson and Euan Bauld received second team all-star honours.

The women were also well represente­d with all-star selections. Becky Hanna of Howie Centre was named to the first all-star team, while Kennedy Curry and Amelia Carlini were picked for the second all-star team.

Both Capers teams will host the Atlantic University Sport Championsh­ips, beginning toda, at the Cape Breton Health Recreation Complex in Sydney.

The Cape Breton teams will play in the semifinal games on Friday with the women taking the field at 2 p.m., followed by the men at 4:30 p.m.
