Cape Breton Capers to play Memorial, Dalhousie in AUS semifinals action Friday

The Cape Breton Capers men’s and women’s soccer teams finally know who they will be playing in today’s semifinals at the Atlantic University Sport championsh­ips in Sydney.

In the women’s division, the No. 1 seed Capers will face the No. 6 seed Memorial SeaHawks after the Newfoundla­nd squad upset the No. 3 seed Dalhousie Tigers, 4-0, in the quarter-finals on Thursday.

The Capers and SeaHawks met twice in the regular season with Cape Breton posting a win

and a tie on Sept. 29 and Sept. 30 in St. John’s, N.L.

In the men’s division, the No 1 seed Cape Breton will play the No. 4 seed Dalhousie Tigers after the Halifax school blanked the Acadia Axemen 1-0 in quarterfin­al play Thursday evening.

Cape Breton and Dalhousie met once this season with the Capers picking up a 2-0 win on Oct. 14 in Sydney.

The women’s game is scheduled for 2 p.m., followed by the men at 4:30 p.m. at the Cape Breton Health Recreation Complex.

In women’s semifinal action, Nicole Torraville scored twice

to lead Memorial to its win over Dalhousie. Lauren Taylor and Teri Murphy also scored for the Newfoundla­nd school.

AUS first team all-star Sydney Walsh stopped all six shots she faced between the pipes for the SeaHawks. Kate Fines stopped two of six shots in the loss for the Tigers.

The second semifinal game saw the No. 4 seed St. Francis Xavier X-Women blank the No. 5 seed Saint Mary’s Huskies 5-0.

Kelsey Ellis had two goals and an assist for the X-Women, while Elise Brennan, Catherine Kennedy and Olivia Czipf added single markers.

Emma Kuzmyk made two saves in the win for the Antigonish-based school. Kyanna Gilks stopped two of six shots, before being replaced by Ashley Bank, who made one save in her 45 minutes of relief.

In the Dalhousie vs. Acadia men’s quarter-final, Kallen Heenan had the lone goal for the Tigers in the victory.

Ben Grondin stopped all 10 shots he faced for Dalhousie. Nic Jefferies turned aside four of five shots for Acadia.

The other men’s quarter-final on Thursday saw the No. 3 seed New Brunswick Reds down the No. 6 seed Moncton Aigles Bleus

3-0. Dan Walker, Matt Quigley and Grant Kakacs scored goals for UNB.

Evan Baker picked up the win for the Reds, facing no shots. Christian Masimengo was tagged with the loss for Moncton, stopping seven of 10 shots.

In other semifinals action scheduled for Friday, in the women’s division, the No. 2 seed Acadia Axewomen will play the St. Francis Xavier at 11:30 a.m. In the second men’s semifinal, No. 2 seed St. FX will face the No. 3 seed New Brunswick at 7 p.m.
