BEC, Cape Breton Highlands to host NSSAF provincial tournament­s this weekend

SYDNEY — A pair of Cape Breton high schools will play host to the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation provincial soccer championsh­ips this weekend.

The Breton Education Centre Bears will host the Division 2 boys provincial­s at Veterans Memorial Turf in New Waterford. Joining the host Bears in the tournament are École du Carrefour of Dartmouth, École secondaire de Par-en-Bas of Tusket, and Middleton Regional High School.

The tournament will begin today at noon with Carrefour playing Par-en-Bas, followed by BEC and Middleton at 2:30 p.m.

The bronze medal game will be Saturday at 10 a.m., followed by the championsh­ip game at noon. Cape Breton Highlands Education Centre/Academy will host the Division 3 girls’ provincial championsh­ip in Margaree Harbour. Along with Cape Breton Highlander­s, Sacred Heart School of Halifax, Oxford High School and Annapolis West Education Centre of Annapolis Royal will also participat­e.

Action begins today with Cape Breton Highlands playing Sacred Heart at noon, while Annapolis West and Oxford will meet at 2:30 p.m.

The bronze game is set for 10 a.m. on Saturday, followed by the championsh­ip match at noon. The Breton Education Centre Bears Division 2 girls will also play in a provincial tournament this weekend in Canning, N.S., while Cape Breton Highlander­s Division 3 boys will be in Eastern Passage for its provincial event.
