Cape Breton University will celebrate the success of more than 230 graduates with its fall convocation ceremony today.

Among the graduates will be 31 members of CBU’s first bachelor of science nursing advanced standing program.

Michael Cadegan of Glace Bay will serve as the 2018 fall class valedictorian.

“It feels very special to be a member of CBU’s first graduating class of the advanced standing nursing program,” he said in a news release. “I can say with confidence that CBU has prepared me for a successful career in the health-care field. And, as valedictorian I hope that I will be able to remind my fellow graduates of the fond memories they’ve made at CBU, while instilling in them a sense of hope and optimism for the future.”

The graduating class, made up of students from more than 13 countries, will receive degrees, diplomas and certificates from chancellor Annette Verschuren. Graduates were given the option of requesting their parchments in a variety of first languages, including French, Gaelic and Mi’kmaq.

Cape Breton University also will confer the degree doctor of letters, honoris causa to Thunder Woman —Lottie Johnson — and businessman Jim Kehoe. CBU will also confer the degree doctor of laws, honoris causa, to Michael MacDonald, Chief Justice of Nova Scotia Supreme Court.

For those who are not able to attend the ceremony, which will take place at the Membertou Trade and Convention Centre, it will be available via live-stream beginning at 2 p.m. at www.cbu.ca.
