Screaming Eagles homestand continues

Cape Breton hosting defending Memorial Cup champion this weekend

The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles will continue their four-game homestand this weekend when they host the Acadie-Bathurst Titan today and Sunday at Centre 200.

The Screaming Eagles (8-8-0-1) enter the weekend fourth in the Maritimes Division and 11th overall in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League standings with 17 points.

Cape Breton is led offensivel­y by Russian forward Egor Sokolov, who leads the league in goals (13) and has 23 points in 17 games.

St. Louis Blues prospect Mathias Laferrière follows with seven goals and 15 assists for 22 points, and Mitchell Balmas with nine goals and 12 assists for 21 points.

Acadie-Bathurst (3-12-0-1) is tied for last place in the Maritimes Division and the 18-team league with the Saint John Sea Dogs with seven points.

The defending Memorial Cup champions are led by New York Islanders first-round pick Noah Dobson, Cole Rafuse, Evan MacKinnon and former Cape Breton West Islander Logan Chisholm, all with 10 points.

The Screaming Eagles are coming off a 4-3 loss to the Moncton Wildcats Tuesday night in Sydney, while the Titan suffered a 2-1 loss to the Val-d’Or Foreurs Thursday night in Bathurst, N.B.

Cape Breton and AcadieBatu­rst Titan will begin the two-game weekend series tonight at 7 p.m. The teams will also meet on Sunday at 4 p.m. Following the weekend games, the Screaming Eagles will wrap up their homestand on Wednesday when they host the Chicoutimi Saguenéens.
