Capers’ Freeman named U Sports rookie of the year; Disipio named to first all-star team in soccer
SYDNEY – Erin Freeman of the Cape Breton Capers women’s soccer team was named the U Sports rookie of the year during the U Sports awards banquet in Ottawa on Wednesday.
Freeman, a forward/midfielder, started all 12 regular season games for the Capers, recording three and six assists — a feat tied for third in the nation among rookie players.
The Halifax native becomes the second Cape Breton player to take home the U Sports rookie of the year honours. Freeman was also named to the U Sports second all-star team as well as the allrookie team.
Cape Breton midfielder Ciera Disipio also received all-star honours.
She was named to the U Sports first all-star team.
The U Sports men’s awards ceremony was also held on Wednesday night in Vancouver, B.C. Award winners were not available at press time.
